Dakota Johnson Is a Late-Blooming Lesbian in the Trailer for Am I OK?

Max

After spending more than two years in film festival purgatory, Dakota Johnson’s long-awaited lesbian movie is headed to Max this June, and we finally have a trailer.

Co-directed by Tig Notaro and her wife, fellow comedian Stephanie Allynne, Am I OK? stars Johnson as Lucy, a 30-something Angeleno who just can’t figure out why she’s not connecting with any of the guys she dates. Cut to her engaging in a well-worn queer rite of passage: Googling “Am I a lesbian quiz” at an inopportune moment. (Someone please show this poor woman the Lesbian Masterdoc!) Luckily, the socially awkward Lucy has her outgoing best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) to rely on as she comes to terms with being a late bloomer.

“You did want a Volvo in high school,” Jane points out after Lucy comes out to her.

“I’m nervous all the time, and I’m scared of everything,” Lucy laments, as we see her fumble her way through a series of meet-cutes. You’re never too old to be the anxious, overthinking queer that you were meant to be, kids!

Published to Tumblr in 2018, the guide has since helped droves of queer people come out, including singer Kehlani.

Yet just as Lucy seems to be gaining confidence, the film’s official synopsis promises one last hurdle: Jane is moving to London, leaving her to navigate the queer dating scene without her best friend by her side. Will the two besties be able to overcome the big changes in their lives? Given that Am I OK? is based on screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz’s own life, I’d say that the odds are in their favor.

“I took my whole coming out late story and I used that, and I really based [Am I OK?] on a real-life friendship with my best friend Jessica [Elbaum], who is also a producer on this movie,” Pomerantz recently told Entertainment Weekly. “[...] We had sort of a big fight, and then we’re friends again, but then simultaneously, I was struggling to come out. And so I realized that was the story that I really wanted to tell.”

Although Am I OK? premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival alongside another one of Johnson’s projects, Cha Cha Real Smooth — which debuted on Apple TV+ all the way back in June 2022 — it’s somehow taken over two years for the former to get pulled off the shelf. Given that Johnson’s most recent movie, the so-bad-it’s-good Madame Web currently ranks No. 1 on Netflix, I’d like to think that her and her Amazonian spiders helped get this queer comedy gem out into the world.

Either way, I hope that this means we’re guaranteed another absolutely unhinged Johnson press tour. Get this woman some limes, ASAP!

Am I OK? premieres on Thursday, June 6, on Max.
