A new Daiso Japanese dollar store is coming to metro Phoenix. Here's when and where

Daiso is a wildly popular Japanese dollar store known for selling everything from beauty products to baking utensils.

In Japanese, dai means big and so means to create. The international chain celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and has been unveiling new products.

Daiso has over 5,800 stores worldwide and it's still growing: It's set to open its second location in metro Phoenix.

A Daiso store in Mesa will soon join Arizona's first Daiso store, a Chandler location that opened in March 2022. The Mesa store will sell home décor, stationary and food inspired from Japan, among many other things, in a 5,340-square-foot space.

The new Daiso in Mesa will hold its grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23. The first 100 customers who spend at least $30 on Saturday or Sunday will get a tote bag and plushie.

Is everything at Daiso $1?

Daiso was founded as a 100-yen store, which is about 65 cents in U.S. currency. Its products in U.S. stores are mainly $1.75 with more costly items labeled accordingly.

"This achievement reflects the dedication and support of our customers who have embraced Daiso's unique concept and diverse product range,” John Clarke, chief development officer for Daiso USA said in a press release. “We are excited to provide an exceptional shopping experience to the vibrant Mesa community and look forward to serving our customers with the utmost care and dedication."

He said Arizona Daiso customers have shown a desire for more locations through online business and social media. Daiso has 104 stores in seven states, with more opening in 2024.
