DaBaby took the stage as the opening act at the 2023 BET Hip Hop awards on Tuesday (Oct. 10) and performed his viral hit “SHAKE SUMN.” He was also joined by Sexyy Red, Juvenile, and Mannie Fresh to help set the tone for the evening with an energetic performance.

To kick off his set, the North Carolina native strutted down the aisles of the Atlanta stadium dressed in his firefighter outfit from the “SHAKE SUMN” music video. As he makes it to the main stage, he’s joined by Sexyy Red, who spits her guest verse on the official song’s remix.

Then, DaBaby switched over to deliver a rendition of “GHETTO GIRLS,” before he was united with New Orleans legends Mannie Fresh and Juvenile. The rappers united in front of the roaring crowd, dapped each other up, and proceeded to perform “Project Chick” together. The transition between the two songs was seamless, considering DaBaby’s track samples the 2000 hit.

In 2022, the 31-year-old rapper dropped off two projects, BETTER THAN YOU and Baby On Baby 2. The former was a joint effort with YoungBoy Never Broke Again while the latter was the official follow-up to his breakthrough LP, 2019’s Baby On Baby. He also shared a three-pack in May 2023 titled CALL DA FIREMAN, which housed the aforementioned “SHAKE SUMN” hit. The track went on to peak at No. 65 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Elsewhere in the show’s lineup, several awards were set to be presented to honor Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary. Marley Marl received this year’s I Am Hip-Hop Award to commemorate over 40 years of his trailblazing influence. The New York native has worked with the likes of Kool G Rap, MC Shan, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shanté, Masta Ace, and more, blessing the genre with his production expertise. Rakim and LL Cool J performed a tribute to the legend.
