D-III Heidelberg runs hook-and-lateral play to lineman for TD (Video)
Penn State wasn’t the only team to pull out a hook-and-lateral play over the weekend.
Division III Heidelberg University ran a similar play Saturday against Capital University, except this one involved an offensive lineman. Everything about it was gorgeous, especially the front flip into the end zone.
The whole design of the play was pretty cool. Quarterback Tyler Stoyle rolled right and threw back left to wideout Demetrius Magee. Like the play Penn State ran with DaeSean Hamilton and Saquon Barkley, it had the looks of a screen. In PSU’s case, Hamilton pitched the ball to running back Barkley for a big gain.
In Heidelberg’s case, the pitch went to left tackle Brock Riggs. It was set up perfectly. Riggs, listed at 6-foot-1 and 290 pounds, took the pitch around the 12-yard line and had a clear path to the end zone.
The front flip into the end zone was just icing on the cake for Riggs, a senior playing his final collegiate game.
Riggs’ first career touchdown gave Heidelberg a 49-20 lead in an eventual 63-20 victory. The Student Princes (again, D-III teams always have the best nicknames) finished the year 7-3.
