As the Sex and the City spinoff prepares to come back for its third season, Cynthia Nixon is opening up about why she’s not phased about some of the criticism. During an appearance at the 90th Annual Drama League Awards on Friday, May 17, Nixon–who played the red-haired, Harvard-educated lawyer Miranda Hobbes in the series–said that the franchise has a history of pushing boundaries in sex and relationships, and the reboot is no different. Amidst backlash to And Just Like That…, Emmy award-winning star reflected on the similar hate that she and her fellow SATC co-stars encountered when the original show debuted in 1998.

Hobbes revealed that she, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, and Kristin Davis came under fire for their portrayal of the characters’ sex lives on the series when it first came out. “They kept saying over and over, ‘These aren’t really women, these are gay men in disguise. Women don’t talk like this. Women don’t talk about sex like this,’” she told Page Six at the event.

The actress said she wasn’t surprised by the discourse as “People have always been very passionate about Sex and the City and now And Just Like That….”

While the reboot has weathered its own share of controversy, most notably around Hobbes’ character leaving her husband Steve Brady (a beloved mainstay from the original series) for a comedian named Che Diaz, Nixon insisted that the spinoff was actually following in its predecessor’s footsteps.

“I think that’s what’s so great about And Just Like That,” she continued. “We keep pushing the boundaries. We’re not going to do the same old stuff that was once shocking that you’ve now got used to.”

While Che Diaz, who was played by Sara Ramirez, won’t be returning for the third season, Sarah Jessica Parker recently teased an update on her highly-anticipated reunion with Aidan Shaw.

“It’s time for her to commit more to being the relevant person she wants to be. So, what does that mean, and where might that take a person?” Parker said during a recent Warner Bros. Discovery Upfronts presentation. “Aidan plays a somewhat significant part in the answer to that question.”

Parker’s character also came under fire for being a bad friend during the spinoff series, and only time will tell how she handles things with Aidan this time around when they rekindle their romance.

When asked what advice she’d give her character Carrie for the third season of And Just Like That… during the event, Parker joked, "Don’t have an affair, don’t lose Aidan’s beloved dog, and get a financial planner."
