Cynthia Erivo has two chances at the Oscars to become the youngest EGOT winner ever
While being a double nominee at the Oscars is much to celebrate, Cynthia Erivo has an even bigger achievement coming her way should she win at least one Academy Award on February 9.
The Harriet actress is in the running to become the youngest EGOT winner ever, having already won a Tony for Best Lead Actress in a Musical in 2016, a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2017, and a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program in 2017 — all stemming from her role at Celie in the 2015 Broadway revival of The Color Purple musical.
With Oscar nominations for Best Actress for Harriet and Best Original Song for the film’s theme “Stand Up,” Erivo now has two chances to unseat singer John Legend as the youngest EGOT winner. Even if she doesn’t win, she is in good company with other big stars who are just an Oscar away from EGOT-ing.
Should anyone take issue with the performer’s Emmy being a Daytime one, Whoopi Goldberg, long considered the first and only black woman to achieve an EGOT, received her Emmys for co-hosting the daytime talk show The View.
