Cyndi Lauper Criticizes Madonna's Fiery Women’s March Speech

Cyndi Lauper visited the Clubhouse on Watch What Happens Live Wednesday night. Andy Cohen asked Cyndi what she thought about Madonna’s fiery speech at the Women’s March in Washington, D.C., and Cyndi said she was glad Madonna was there, but thought her speech could have been better.

During her speech, Madonna dropped F-bombs and made incendiary comments such as, “I have thought an awful lot of blowing up the White House, but I know that this won’t change anything.” Cyndi said, “I don’t think that it served our purpose, because anger is not better than clarity and humanity. That is what opens people’s minds. When you want to change people’s minds, you have to share your real story.”

Cyndi went on to praise Scarlett Johansson for being clear and eloquent as she shared her story about going to Planned Parenthood for the first time. Cyndi said she thought Scarlett’s speech was a good example of what was needed at the march, while Madonna’s speech was counterproductive. Cyndi finished by saying, “Yelling doesn’t [work]; it just jacks people up. But it doesn’t communicate any kind of humanity or any kind of story that would open another person’s mind.”
