It's come to this: Cut quarterback Johnny Manziel shilling cut-rate car insurance

We’ve seen celebrities do all kinds of things to stay in the limelight or keep paychecks coming in — often for both reasons.

Whether it’s appearing on “Dancing with the Stars” or another reality show or signing on to sell car insurance, we’ve seen it all.

Billboards and commercials

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is the latest celebrity to go that route.

Manziel has signed on to be part of a new campaign for Direct Auto Insurance; the discount provider recently launched a rebrand campaign revolving around giving people second chances.

In addition to Manziel, they signed former U.S. Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding and rapper Fat Joe, all of whom have dealt with embarrassing public incidents.

Manziel recorded a 30-second ad for the company, and is also on a billboard.

“When I got cut, Direct still wanted me on their team,” his billboards say.

‘Johnny Car Insurance’

At least one other former NFL player saw one of the billboards with Manziel and had a laugh at his expense.

Receiver Antonio Bryant, whose 8-year career saw him play for the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Browns, tweeted a photo on Monday.

“‘Johnny Car Insurance’,” he wrote, taking a swipe at Manziel’s “Johnny Football” nickname. “On billboards now? They really tried to compare Baker Mayfield to this guy?”

Mayfield, of course, is Cleveland’s current quarterback.

Direct got wind of Bryant’s tweet somehow (Bryant didn’t mention the company), and decided to jab back, but the 2002 second-round pick wasn’t having it.

“How many times did you get cut?,” Direct’s Twitter account asked Bryant.

“3 times in my career but I damn sure ain’t never needed my face on a billboard as the face of a 1-star customer reviewed auto insurance company with a C+ [Better Business Bureau] rating to keep my money right,” he snapped back.

That, as the kids say, is savage.

And thus we end our little tale of a former NFL quarterback, a former NFL receiver, a car insurance company and social media.
