Cubans at Sea for 16 Days Rescued After Vessel Capsizes Off Florida Coast

Eight Cubans who were at sea for more than 16 days were rescued after their makeshift vessel capsized off the coast of St Lucie County, Florida, on February 21, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.

In a post on Facebook, the sheriff’s office said reports came on Sunday evening of a vessel in distress off Waveland Beach. Helicopter footage captured the scene, showing the boat being rocked by large waves before capsizing.

Six men and two pregnant women were rescued and taken to hospital, where they were all in a stable condition.

“Federal authorities will now determine if any further immigration action will be taken,” the sheriff’s office said. Credit: Martin County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
