Cuban Leader Fidel Castro Dead at 90

Fidel Castro, former president of Cuba, has died at age 90.

Per the Associated Press, Castro’s brother, President Raul Castro, announced his death Friday evening on Cuban state television.

Castro first came to power in Cuba on New Year’s Day 1959, and served as president until 2008, when he was ultimately succeeded by younger brother Raul. His reign over the island nation lasted nearly half a century, outlasting 10 U.S. presidents.

Under his Communist regime, Castro saw U.S.-Cuba relations severed in 1961, due in part to his close ties with the Soviet Union. He would live to see the two nations begin to reestablish diplomatic ties; on Dec. 17, 2014, Raul Castro and President Barack Obama announced that negotiations were underway to end the trade embargoes that crippled Cuba for nearly six decades.

Over the years, the Cuban leader was satirized on some of television’s biggest shows, including The Simpsons, Seinfeld, The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live. (Watch a clip here.)
