Crypt near Marilyn Monroe’s final resting place is up for auction

A crypt near the final resting place of Marilyn Monroe will be auctioned at the end of March in Los Angeles.

Bidders wishing to spend eternity alongside the “Some Like it Hot” in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary are invited to make an offer during a three-day event beginning March 28 featuring “Property from the Playboy Archives and Hugh G. Hefner Foundation and Property From the Life & Career if Marilyn Monroe,” according to Julien’s Auctions.

The winning bid, which is expected to land somewhere between $200,000 and $400,000, is for a space in the Corridor of Memories identified as Wall B, Space C-3. That crypt is located a row above and four spaces to the left of where Monroe was laid to rest in August 1962.

Hefner, who famously put Monroe on the front cover of the first Playboy magazine in 1953, is spending eternity in the same mausoleum. He purchased the crypt next to Monroe’s in 1992 and was interred there 25 years later.

Hefner reportedly told the the Los Angeles Times in 2009 he dropped $75,000 on the plot because “Spending eternity next to Marilyn is an opportunity too sweet to pass up.”

According to IMDb, Monroe preferred a comfortable resting place to the bright lights of Hollywood.

“A career is wonderful, but you can’t curl up with it on a cold night,” she reportedly said.

The mortuary that houses Monroe’s VIP mausoleum is also home to the remains of her “Some Like it Hot” costar Jack Lemmon and showbusiness royals Farrah Fawcett, Ryan O’Neal and Natalie Wood.

Julien’s bills the crypt being unloaded in March as part of a collection of 1,000 artifacts taken from the Playboy Headquarters and Mansion along with “personal property consisting of film wardrobe, photographs, documents and ephemera from the incandescent life of Marilyn Monroe.”

Other items will soon be listed.
