Is 'Cry Pretty' Carrie Underwood's next chart-topper? Teary-eyed fans think so.

After a week of teasing by the singer on social media, Carrie Underwood’s new single, “Cry Pretty,” is finally out. True to Underwood’s history of delivering outsize hits, it’s a no-holds-barred, all-encompassing emotional fest.

The song came from a strong foundation right from the start: Underwood cowrote it with Nashville powerhouse writers Hillary Lindsey, Liz Rose, and Lori McKenna, and the group chose a theme that simply couldn’t fail to resonate with listeners. “The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can’t hold them back,” Underwood explained in a letter to fans on Tuesday (April 10).

The lyrics of the tune reflect this sentiment admirably: “You can pretty lie and say it’s okay/ You can pretty smile and just walk away/Pretty much make your way through anything/But you can’t cry pretty.”

Fans unanimously seem to think the song was worth the (brief but agonizing) wait, with many of them raving about how it speaks to their hearts … and handkerchiefs.

Underwood’s last new release was another grandiose anthem, “The Champion,” which came out in January for the Super Bowl and featured guest vocals from Ludacris.
