BENTON HARBOR — Lake Michigan College’s department of visual and performing arts presents a staged reading of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Mendel Center, 2755 E. Napier Ave.

The 1953 play dramatizes the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem in the 17th century as a parable for the 1950s’ persecution of suspected communists in the U.S.

The staged reading is offered as a special event in conjunction with the fall play production of “John Proctor Is the Villain.” Proctor, who in real life was convicted of and hanged for witchcraft in 1692, also appears as a character in “The Crucible,” as do several other real people who are also in “John Proctor.”

Remaining performances for “John Proctor” are scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 17 and 18 and 3 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Mendel Center.

Tickets to “John Proctor” are $18-$12; free for all students.

Admission to “The Crucible” is free.
