Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden Dusts Off Historic Tiara for France State Visit: See the Bling!

Crown Princess Victoria's pick might have been a tribute to the visiting country

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden chose a tiara of unusual provenance for the state dinner with France.

On Tuesday night, the Crown Princess, 46, slipped on the Napoleonic Cut-Steel Tiara for the state dinner held in honor of President Emmanuel Macron’s two-day state visit to Sweden. The French president and his wife, First Lady Birgitte Macron, joined the Swedish royals for the diplomatic dinner at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, which called for a white-tie dress code, including tiaras.

Crown Princess Victoria’s choice of the Napoleonic Cut Steel Tiara might have been a nod to the French guests, taking flag dressing to a glittering new level. According to The Court Jeweller, the bold headpiece was made for Hortense de Beauharnais, the stepdaughter of Napoleon Bonaparte. The steel tiara is unusual because it's completely gem-free, featuring a feather, floral, acorn and oak leaf motif wrought in gold and steel.

The tiara was reportedly passed down to Hortense’s niece Josephine, who married King Oscar I of Sweden in 1823.

The accessory then seemed to disappear for a hundred years. As the story goes, in 1976, the newly-minted Queen Silvia of Sweden was “poking about” the palace cabinets and found the forgotten treasure in a velvet box, the Court Jeweller reported. King Carl XVI Gustaf’s wife had it restored and wore it for the first time during a state visit to Austria in 1979, keeping it in her royal rotation ever since.

The long-forgotten headpiece also apparently caught her eldest daughter’s eye when she came of tiara-wearing age, and Crown Princess Victoria has been wearing the Napoleonic Cut Steel Tiara since the 2000s. While the sparkler has a complementary pair of earrings and a choker, Victoria has put her own spin on a favorite combination.

On Tuesday, the heir to the throne wore the tiara with a dove gray ballgown from H&M (a Swedish label!), repeating a tiara and gown combo she first sported at the Nobel Prize Banquet in 2016.

Kate Middleton also repeated a tiara and gown combination (for the first time) in December 2023, pairing the Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara with a pink sequin Jenny Packham gown for a Buckingham Palace reception like she did to Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan’s royal wedding banquet in June.

Crown Princess Victoria’s mother, Queen Silvia, and her sister-in-law, Princess Sofia, also sparkled at the state dinner on Tuesday — both wearing sentimental head-toppers from their wedding days!

Queen Silvia, 80, wore the Cameo Tiara she married King Carl XVI Gustaf in 1976, while Princess Sofia, 39, shimmered in the Palmette Tiara the King and Queen gifted her when she wed their son Prince Carl Philip in 2015.

The Swedish Royal Court said the Macrons visited at the invitation of the King and that the two-day trip started in Stockholm and ended in Skåne.

“The State Visit will further strengthen and promote the longstanding, broad and excellent relations between Sweden and France. It will also provide an opportunity to enhance cooperation in the areas of innovation and green transition, trade and investment, as well as defense and security in our neighborhood,” the court said in a statement.

Crown Princess Victoria and her husband, Prince Daniel, helped welcome President Macron to a business forum in Stockholm on Wednesday, one of the last stops on the schedule.
