Meet the children of the soon-to-be king.

Crown Prince Frederik, who will become king of Denmark when Queen Margrethe abdicates the throne on Jan. 14, and his wife Crown Princess Mary share four kids.

Crown Princess Mary, who will become queen consort and known as Queen Mary when Queen Margrethe steps down as monarch, first met Prince Frederik at a bar in Sydney, Australia in 2000, where he was visiting for the Summer Olympics.

After instantly hitting it off, the couple dated long-distance before getting engaged and later married at Copenhagen Cathedral in 2004. In the years that followed, they welcomed Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and 12-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

In addition to their full-time royal work, Prince Frederick and Princess Mary's focus has been on their children. The Danish Royal House announced on Jan. 2 that the couple's eldest child, Prince Christian, will also receive a title change when Queen Margrethe steps down on Jan. 14 after 52 years on the throne, becoming Crown Prince.

Prince Christian's 18th birthday in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Prince Christian is the eldest child of Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary, born on Oct. 15, 2005. As the couple's firstborn child, he'll follow his father in the line of succession to the Danish throne.

In October 2023, Prince Christian celebrated his 18th birthday with a lavish gala, including royals from around the world who traveled to Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen to celebrate the milestone event.

The banner birthday was marked with a balcony appearance, glam royal gala and induction into the Order of the Elephant, Denmark’s highest honor of chivalry, followed by a formal declaration to the constitution that November.

In June 2023, the Danish Royal House announced that Prince Christian wouldn't take the government funding he is entitled to by law when he turned 18. Instead, he would continue to focus on his studies, and the issue would be revisited when he turns 21 or if there is a throne change.

“His Royal Highness Prince Christian turns 18 on 15 October 2023,” courtiers said in a statement on Instagram. “Prince Christian's main priority in the coming year will be the completion of the Prince's upper secondary education. In continuation of this, the Royal Palace will provide information on Prince Christian's further youth and education courses when the time is right.”

Following his 18th birthday festivities, Prince Christian attended a meeting of the Council of State (which is comprised of government ministers) on Nov. 14 and declared that he would comply with the Danish constitution. This important step enables him to be appointed as regent "in the event that both HM The Queen and HRH The Crown Prince are prevented from governing."

On Jan. 14, Prince Christian will receive a royal title change when Queen Margrethe abdicates and his father accedes the throne. “HRH Prince Christian becomes the heir to the throne and will henceforth be referred to as HRH Crown Prince Christian,” announced the Danish Royal House on Jan. 2, 2024.

Princess Isabella of Denmark is the second child of Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary, born on April 21, 2007 (she shared a birthday with the late Queen Elizabeth). She is third in the line of succession to the Danish throne, after her father and older brother Prince Christian.

Unlike Crown Prince Frederick and Prince Christian, Princess Isabella's title won't change when Queen Margrethe abdicates the throne on Jan. 14, 2024. Currently, Isabella is styled as Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat.

In January 2020, Princess Isabella and her three siblings began a 12-week stay at the international school Lemania-Verbier in Switzerland. However, their plans abroad were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, per the royal family's website.

In May 2022, Princess Isabella celebrated her confirmation while wearing her mother's white suit at Fredensborg Castle Church — the same place where her father and grandmother were confirmed in 1981 and 1955, respectively.

In a slight change, Princess Isabella opted for a different brooch than what her mother wore. The diamond, pearl and pink pearl brooch was gifted to Isabella by her grandmother Queen Margrethe on her christening day in 2007 and once belonged to Queen Alexandrine.

Prince Frederick and Princess Mary welcomed their third child, son Prince Vincent, on Jan. 8, 2011. Just a few minutes older than his twin sister Princess Josephine, he's fourth in line for the Danish throne.

The royal family celebrated Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine's milestone 10th birthday with new portraits in January 2021.

In December 2023, Prince Vincent made an appearance in a sweet holiday video. The clip gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the royal family's kitchen during Christmas time, featuring a cameo of Prince Vincent lending a helping hand with the baking.

Prince Frederick and Princess Mary welcomed their fourth child, daughter Princess Josephine, just minutes after Prince Vincent on Jan. 8, 2011. The youngest of the royal couple's children, she's fifth in line for the Danish throne behind her twin brother.

Princess Josephine lives with her parents and siblings at the royal residence Amalienborg in Copenhagen and at the Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace. Since she was young, she has stepped out publicly alongside her family at various official outings and events.
