‘The Crown’ poised to make Golden Globes history with 6th bid for Best Drama Series

Since it’s about to wrap up its Netflix run after six seasons, “The Crown” has no chance of matching the record for most Best Drama Series Golden Globe nominations, which has been held since 2001 by seven-time contender “ER.” However, its appearances in five previous lineups give it the opportunity to make history in a different way, as its probable upcoming sixth program notice would make it the first concluded drama series to earn Golden Globes recognition for every one of its multiple seasons. This monumental achievement, which would occur five decades into the existence of this major category, truly shouldn’t be difficult for the ever-popular show to pull off, especially since it’s already a two-time Best Drama Series winner.
The yet-unseen sixth and final season of “The Crown” is currently ranked third on Gold Derby’s Best Drama Series Golden Globe predictions list, with the early odds heavily favoring HBO’s “Succession,” followed by the same network’s “The Last of Us.” Other potential nominees include Apple TV Plus’ “The Morning Show” and Netflix’s “The Diplomat.”

The streaming staple’s possible farewell win (following its 2017 and 2021 victories) would come for a batch of episodes focused on dramatizing the closing 25 years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign over the United Kingdom. Practically the entire main cast of the fifth season will return, with Imelda Staunton starring as said monarch and Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki playing her heir and his ex-wife, Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
“The Crown,” which received unsuccessful Best Drama Series mentions in 2018, 2020 and 2023, presently stands with 11 other programs that have each competed for the honor five or more times. The top four – “ER” (1995-2001) and six-timers “Dynasty” (1982-1987), “Murder, She Wrote” (1985-1990) and “L.A. Law” (1987-1992) – were all recognized for their first six or seven seasons but fell out of voters’ favor over the subsequent two to eight years.

Due to the fact that each Golden Globes eligibility window coincides with a full calendar year, a few programs have technically racked up Best Drama Series nominations that covered all of their seasons but left some hanging episodes. This will not be the case with “The Crown,” given Netflix’s penchant for single-day drops of entire seasons. Those that are included on this honorary list are “Lou Grant” (1979-1982), “Hart to Hart” (1981-1984), “Thirtysomething” (1988-1991) and “I’ll Fly Away” (1992-1993), all of which continued running for several weeks following their final Golden Globes outings.
While it isn’t currently expected to overpower “Succession” in the 2024 drama series contest, “The Crown” will presumably at least be able to hold this perfect record over the metaphorical head of its strongest challenger, which ended earlier this year and has so far only earned bids for its middle two of four seasons. Those 2020 and 2022 nominations having resulted in wins triggers a higher-stakes battle between “Succession” and “The Crown” to join “The X-Files” (1995, 1997-1998) and “Mad Men” (2008-2010) as one of the most-awarded shows in this category’s history. It’s highly possible that once our Golden Globes-predicting users actually lay eyes on the new “Crown” season, more of them will get behind the idea of it claiming two major distinctions rather than just one.
