How will “The Crown” tackle the death of Princess Diana?

Fans of the Emmy-winning series are about to find out: Netflix just dropped the final season trailer, and it is centered on the moments and memories around that horrific 1997 car crash and funeral.

“I don’t really understand how I ended up here,” Elizabeth Debicki as Diana ponders via voiceover as cameras click away. “Dashing around, and losing sight of myself in the process.”

The somber trailer showcases the swelling chaos that consumed the family, the country, and the world following the announcement of her death alongside Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) in Paris. The curiosity factor alone should generate plenty of eyeballs for Season 6, which will feature Debicki returning as Princess Diana, as well as other Season 5 cast members including Dominic West as Prince Charles, Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.

Joining them will be Rufus Kampa and Ed McVey as Prince William, and Fflyn Edwards and Luther Ford as Prince Harry.

For the first time, Netflix’s Emmy-winning series will be split into two parts: Part 1 (four episodes) will debut November 16, 2023; Part 2 (six episodes) will follow December 14, 2023. Part 1 will center on Diana and Dodi’s love story and tragic end.

“In their first Summer as a divorced couple, Prince Charles and Princess Diana share very different holidays with their sons,” Netflix further shared in a press release. “Diana is being courted by the Fayeds in the South of France, giving the young princes a taste of luxury yachts, video games and movie nights. Charles is sticking to tradition in Balmoral. The comparisons play out in the press, fueled by a fervent paparazzi, and some of the Royal press team.”

The show has been a massive hit (and big Emmy winner) for Netflix since it premiered in 2016, although the recent fifth season was a little less beloved than the others. IndieWire’s TV critic Ben Travers noted in his season review: “Between leaden foreshadowing of a tragedy-to-come and thin questioning of the monarchy’s modern purpose, Peter Morgan’s latest chapter is a sinking ship.”

Despite that, expect plenty to check out how and when this drama — which launched the careers of Claire Foy, Emma Corrin, Josh O’Connor, Vanessa Kirby and others — concludes. (And keep your fingers crossed that a few might return one last time for a flashback cameo, as has happened before.)
