‘The Crown’ Final Season Teaser Is Here, Plus Get a Look at Elizabeth Debicki’s Diana in Iconic Blue Swimsuit

All good things must come to an end, and that includes Netflix’s six-season drama about Queen Elizabeth II, “The Crown”.

Netflix dropped the first teaser for the final installments of the Emmy-winning series this morning, alongside announcing that the final season will be split into two parts: Part 1 (four episodes) will debut November 16, 2023; Part 2 (six episodes) will follow December 14, 2023.

The cast — which broadly changes actors every two seasons — will continue with Season 5’s actors, which include Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.

New this season will be Rufus Kampa and Ed McVey as Prince William, and Fflyn Edwards and Luther Ford as Prince Harry. Don’t expect a Meghan Markle appearance: The final season will wrap with the beginnings of William’s relationship with Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy), around 2005.

Part 1 will concentrate on Princess Diana’s burgeoning relationship with Dodi Fayed and the tragic car crash in 1997. Part 2 will find Prince William trying “to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion,” per a press release.

“The crown is a semblance of permanence,” voiceover in the Season 6 trailer declares. “It’s what you are, not what you do….This is not a choice. It’s a duty.”

The show, whose rabid fans fall down Wikipedia rabbit holes after each season to learn the “truth” behind many of the major and minor moments depicted on the show, is not without controversy. Last season, Judi Dench slammed the show, asking for a warning to air before episodes noting the program is fictional, calling it an “inaccurate and hurtful account of history.”

“Given some of the wounding suggestions apparently contained in the new series — that King Charles plotted for his mother to abdicate, for example, or once suggested his mother’s parenting was so deficient that she might have deserved a jail sentence — this is both cruelly unjust to the individuals and damaging to the institution they represent,” she wrote in 2022. “No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged.”

“The Crown” thus far has neglected to place any kind of note in front of episodes of the series.

Since premiering in 2016 “The Crown” has been nominated for 69 Emmys with 21 wins. It’s also launched the careers of Claire Foy, Vanessa Kirby, Emma Corrin, and Josh O’Connor, among others.
