Can ‘The Crown’ complete its triple crown of Best Drama Actress Emmys for every Queen Elizabeth?

“The Crown” is on the cusp of history at the Emmys. Imelda Staunton is one of the top contenders for Best Drama Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in the sixth and final season of the Netflix biographical drama. She would be the third Elizabeth II to win for “The Crown,” following Claire Foy and Olivia Colman. That would mean Emmys for every lead actress who played the monarch on the show. And it would make “The Crown” the first show to win Best Drama Actress for three different women.

If Staunton does win this year it would be quite fitting as it would continue the trend of Queens Elizabeth winning on their second try. Foy was first nominated in 2017, but lost to Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). Then Foy won for season two of the series in 2018. Colman took over the role in season three as the story progressed to the next stage of Her Majesty’s life and reign. She was nominated in 2020, but lost to Zendaya (“Euphoria”). Then Colman won for season four in 2021. It’s a little different for Staunton, though. She was actually snubbed in 2023 for season five of the series last year, so this year she’d be making a comeback just by securing the nomination.

Chances are good she’ll get in this time, though. The reason: none of last year’s six nominees are eligible to return, leaving the category wide open. In fact, she ranks second in our odds, which are based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. She only trails Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), who was also snubbed from this category the last time she was eligible, in 2022. But Staunton may have an advantage in that this is her last chance to win for this role, which might have also helped Foy and Colman before her. Will she indeed prevail and complete the “Crown” triple crown?
