Crooked Tree Arts Center celebrates 10 years of working with Good Hart Artist Residency

PETOSKEY — This fall, the Crooked Tree Arts Center is celebrating 10 years of collaboration with the Good Hart Artist Residency.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Crooked Tree is hosting an exhibition from Sept. 16-Nov. 4. The exhibit celebrates the artistry's core principals in the exhibit's title of "Art + Place + Community: 10 Years with Good Hart Artist Residency."

The exhibition will feature more than 30 artists that went through the Good Hart Artist Residency, said Liz Erlewine, Crooked Tree's visual arts director.

The exhibition will feature traditional pieces of art — like sculptures, paintings and drawings — used in both traditional and contemporary ways. There will also be mixed media, composed pieces of music, videos and written pieces.

The Good Hart Artist Residency was founded in collaboration with Crooked Tree in 2013. About five years later, the group established their own nonprofit and became its own independent arts organization, while maintaining collaborations with Crooked Tree.

"It's been great to work with them over the years to have such a wonderful arts organization in the community," said Sue Klco, co-founder and executive director of the Good Hart Artist Residency.

Erlewine said the collaboration allows Crooked Tree to help bring different kinds of creative voices to its spaces.

"Good Hart Artist Residency has done such phenomenal work over the past 10 years," Erlewine said. "It's really a delight to get to work with them. They're always a treat to work with, and the caliber of work that they do is something that's really a unique opportunity for us to be able to engage with."

Klco said the anniversary "seems like a big accomplishment" because since starting under Crooked Tree's umbrella, they were able to become their own nonprofit.

She said she "cannot hardly wait" to look back and see the art that's come from the residency's artists once the exhibit opens.

When it comes to the past 10 years, "it flew by," Klco said.

Since founding the residency with her husband, Bill, more than 80 artists have gone through the program.

"It's been a total privilege to meet all these wonderfully creative people over the past 10 years and to work with Crooked Tree Arts Center," Klco said.

To celebrate the exhibit's opening, Crooked Tree will be hosting a watercolor workshop with former Good Hart Artist Residency artist Lindsey Dunnagan, a panel talk at the theater space and then a ticketed event afterwards celebrating the exhibit's opening reception.

The ticket event will include appetizers, a drink ticket, and performances from some of the featured artists throughout the evening.

"It's just a really special thing that we're able to offer," Erlewine said.
