Less than three months after a new writing team was brought into the project, The Croods 2 is history. Sources confirm to Deadline that DreamWorks Animation and new corporate sib Universal Pictures have axed the long-in-the-works sequel to the 2013 toon.

Sources said the project had been going south for a while and that the companies were weighing priorities after DWA was sold to NBCUniversal parent Comcast this year. The Croods 2 didn’t make the cut.

The film was to be the follow-up to The Croods, which dug up $587M worldwide, more than two-thirds of which came from outside North America.  The sequel originally had been set for release December 22, 2017, via 20th Century Fox, but it was put on hold after Comcast’s takeover of DWA.

Kevinand Dan Hageman, the brothers who came up with the story for Warner Bros’ The Lego Movie, were set in August to do a rewrite on Croods 2.

The news first was reported by our sister site Variety.
