More from Deadline

“We never wanted to go away to begin with,” Showrunner Erica Messer told reporters Wednesday during the Television Critics Tour. She also ran the series when it was on CBS before it was canceled after 15 seasons in 2020. “We knew there were plenty of stories to tell. You can fill behind the scenes is a show is lagging, or creatively the scripts aren’t hitting. That never happened to us.”

Criminal Minds: Evolution will recap what the FBI’s elite team of criminal profilers have been up to since fans las saw them. They are then faced with their greatest threat yet, an UnSub (Zach Gilford) who has used the pandemic to build a network of other serial killers. As the world opens back up and the network goes operational, the team must hunt them down, one murder at a time. Original cast members reprising their roles include Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster.

Tonally, the show won’t change too much from when it was on CBS, Messer says. “I’m very aware that teenage kids watch this show. Because I’m aware of that, I never wanted us to go into full rated R, with extra violence or anything that would suddenly feel like a very different series. [Instead] we live in the world longer. You get to live and breathe in this space and it can be a disturbing space to be in.”

Criminal Minds: Evolution is produced by ABC Signature and CBS Studios. Erica Messer serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer. Breen Frazier and Chris Barbour will serve as writers and executive producers, Glenn Kershaw will direct and executive produce and Mark Gordon will also serve as executive producer.
