Crews Battle Caldor Fire Overnight as it Rages Toward South Lake Tahoe

Crews battling the Caldor Fire worked overnight into Friday, August 27, as the blaze spread northeast through northern California’s El Dorado County in the direction of Lake Tahoe, growing to more than 143,900 acres by Friday morning, officials said.

Footage shot overnight shows firefighters faced with towering flames just a few miles from South Lake Tahoe where, on Thursday, the city government issued a local emergency proclamation that it said would “allow for greater flexibility” in its response to the fire.

Evacuation orders were extended on Thursday to the areas of Twin Bridges and Echo Summit along Highway 50, approximately 10 miles southwest of South Lake Tahoe.

The fire was just 12 percent contained as of Friday morning, and more than 3,200 personnel were assigned to the blaze, Cal Fire said. Credit: @sarah_luna_1111 via Storyful
