Creed's Scott Stapp reveals he's a grandfather: 'I don't feel like a grandpa'

The news comes as Stapp prepares for Creed's first live shows in more than a decade.

More inspired, soaring rock arena rock epics may be on the way as Creed frontman Scott Stapp has announced that he's a grandfather.

Creed's only Grammy-winning song, "With Arms Wide Open," was inspired by Stapp upon learning his wife was pregnant with their first child. That child, his son Jagger, is now a dad as well.

"I have a beautiful, beautiful grandson," the "Higher" singer told PEOPLE in the days before the release of his fourth solo album, Higher Power. "I don't feel like a grandpa! I look at myself and I'm like, when I was a kid, grandpas had gray hair and a cane. So, maybe it's the food and the vitamins and everything else we've learned on how to better take care of ourselves. But a grandpa I am. And a proud one at that."

Jagger, Stapp's 25-year-old son with ex-wife Hillaree Burns, had a baby boy named Cash in September. Stapp has three more children with his current wife, Jaclyn, aged 17 to 6.

Stapp's music, both solo and with Creed, has dealt with substance abuse and a troubled relationship with his stepfather. That has informed the way he approaches fatherhood, telling PEOPLE that his kids are his "purpose."

"They make me want to be a better man," he said. "I just want to make them proud, and be a father they can look up to and say, 'That's my dad. I'm proud of him.'"

He also says that his younger kids have seen a different side of him than Jagger, who was around as Stapp dealt with substance abuse. "They don't know a dad that was battling demons, but Jagger did," Stapp told PEOPLE. "And ironically, without getting into too much, Jagger had some things that he went through. I think with that common shared experience, it brought some clarity and understanding to him and definitely brought some forgiveness."

Stapp's new album arrives just weeks before he is scheduled to play live with his Creed bandmates for the first time in 12 years. Their tour starts with headlining appearances on the inaugural Summer of '99 cruise. The boat shows will be followed by a 40-city North American tour, the majority of which will be played with 3 Doors Down and Finger Eleven as supporting acts. Daughtry, Switchfoot, Tonic, and Big Wreck will also perform on select dates.
