Craig Melvin and his family celebrated Christmas with a furry new addition to their household.

The TODAY co-host shared during Tuesday's episode of the morning show that his family welcomed a puppy on Christmas and that it was planned as a surprise for his children.

On the morning of the holiday, Melvin's kids, Delano, 9, and Sybil, 7, woke up to find dog toys and bowls wrapped underneath their Christmas tree. Melvin said that he then revealed to the two that they were getting a new puppy.

On Dec. 30, Melvin and his family picked up an Irish doodle puppy in Virginia and named him Myles Copper Melvin. The Dateline correspondent shared that the dog's first name was a nod to Spiderman's Miles Morales and that his daughter selected the middle name.

"It has been a magical few days," Melvin said about the pup during the broadcast, adding, "He's the great unifier."

The television personality also shared images of the dog cozying up on the couch alongside Melvin's wife, reporter Lindsay Czarniak, and their two kids.

Another picture showed Melvin's kids holding the dog, and a third focused solely on Myles as he walked through the grass.

On Instagram, Melvin and Czarniak shared a joint post with a video of their children meeting Myles for the first time. In the same footage, the pup can be seen riding on the kids' laps on the way home.

The couple captioned their post, "We started the year off welcoming our newest family member. Meet Myles. We are smitten already❤️ #love #puppy #family #dog."

During Tuesday's TODAY broadcast, Melvin highlighted how Myles' presence in his home has helped diffuse tension. When Sheinelle Jones asked if Melvin's family is "all in his [Myles'] face," he noted that they've "got to give Myles some space."

"And my wife, Lindsay, is just as bad as the kids," he continued, saying that he tells his family to let Myles "walk around" a bit without being bothered.

That comment prompted Jones to quip, "I feel like I'm going to see you with Myles a lot," to which Al Roker chimed in with, "That's right. Oh gosh, no, you know it."
