Craig Gillespie’s ‘Supergirl’ Movie Confirms June 2026 Theatrical Release

DC Studios and Warner Bros will release Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in theaters on June 26, 2026. The film is being directed by Craig Gillespie and stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman known as Supergirl.

This is the second film after 2025’s Superman to receive a release date since James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to overhaul future DC movie adaptations. Supergirl is scheduled to start shooting this fall, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and DC Studios also has the Batman movie in the works from director Andy Muschietti.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on a script from Ana Nogueira, which was inspired by the 2022 comic written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The character previously helmed a CW series of the same name, but the new iteration will deviate from that portrayal. Warner Bros previously released a Supergirl movie in 1984 with Helen Slater in the title role and Faye Dunaway as the villain.

Last year, Gunn told reporters, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Alcock is best known for playing the younger version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon. She since appeared in the music video for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ “Easy Now.” It has been rumored that her Supergirl will make an appearance in Superman, which stars David Corenswet, although the filmmakers have yet to confirm that.

In January, Gunn shared her casting announcement, writing, “Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl.”
