A cozy new restaurant has opened its doors for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Volusia County.

The Fly In Café, located at 100 Cessna Blvd. in Port Orange, announced its long-awaited opening earlier this month on social media, whetting the community’s appetite with photos of the eatery’s new menus posted to its Facebook page.

The new restaurant has replaced what was formerly the Downwind Café, a Spruce Creek Airport and local community favorite that closed its doors for good several months ago, after being sold to new owners.

The aircraft-themed eatery seems to have kept the same classic, cozy interior that Downwind Café regulars knew and loved, decorated with charming, cloud-patterned sky lights, an array of model airplanes lining the café’s shelves, and various vintage aircraft posters hung along the eatery’s walls.

In a message to eager customers hung on the eatery’s door, the café noted that it would serve its full menu with limited seating during last week's soft opening, continuing to adjust, learn and work through any unforeseen issues. In the same note, the newly-opened café encouraged the local community to call ahead or visit its website to make dining reservations, although I was seated rather immediately when visiting for breakfast over the weekend.

Serving its breakfast menu until 11 a.m., the Fly In Café offers a wide array of tempting sweet and savory morning bites, ranging from the Benedict Florentine, jumbo buttermilk pancakes and the Spruce Creek Scrambler to the three-cheese omelet and French toast.

What’s more, the new menu features a “sides / build your own” section, offering two sides for $10 or three sides for $12, with choices such as a jumbo cinnamon roll, home fried potatoes, two eggs cooked to your liking, fresh fruit, and your choice of meats, including turkey sausage, ham or corned beef hash.

Arriving just prior to the breakfast cutoff, I ordered the hot ham, egg and cheese croissant, a well-toasted, savory breakfast staple, alongside the Southern biscuits and sausage gravy, a comfort-meal classic delivered in a generous portion size for a flavorful, filling brunch.

The anticipated new eatery also offers an extensive lunch menu comprised of pizzas, salads, sandwiches and soups, with tempting new aviation-themed offerings like the Flying High House Pie, Fly In Club Croissant, BLT Bomber and Runway Reuben.

The Fly In Café’s dinner menu, served from 4-10 p.m., includes its own array of mouth-watering selections, from the baked brie, sesame teriyaki salmon and New York strip steak to a range of customizable servings, like the "build your own pasta, burger or grilled chicken sandwich."

Whether making the trip for a weekend brunch with family or a charming date night for two, this new Port Orange addition is worth the visit.

Fly In Café is open from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. Tuesday - Sunday. The eatery serves breakfast from 8-11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., and dinner from 4-10 p.m. For information, call 386-256-2346 or visit Facebook.com.
