Warner Bros. has reportedly reversed course on the Coyote vs. Acme movie starring John Cena. According to Puck News, the studio will now allow the filmmakers to shop the project to other distributors after shelving it for a tax write-off just last week.

Puck News’ Matthew Belloni reports that the abrupt decision was made by Warner film executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy alongside new head of animation Bill Damaschke after online backlash from Coyote vs. Acme director Dave Green and composer Steven Price, as well as the animation community overall.

Amazon is one of the contenders to pick up Coyote vs. Acme, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Screenings will take place for potential buyers this month.

“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of all time,” Green wrote on Twitter about the James Gunn-produced film. “I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project for years. We were all determined to honor the legacies of these historic characters and actually get them right.”

He continued, “Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores. I am beyond proud of the final product, and beyond devastated at WB’s decision. But in the spirit of Wile E. Coyote, resilience and persistence win the day.”

However, Belloni reported that Coyote vs. Acme “didn’t test that well,” adding that Damaschke “feared the brand damage of an underperforming film” following the commercial failure of Space Jam: A New Legacy. Belloni added that there’s “not a big benefit” to Warner Bros. in scrapping the movie for a tax write-off.

According to THR, though,  Coyote vs. Acme “tested multiple times in the 90s,” a score usually reserved for films like Oscar winner Argo or crowd pleasers like the Deadpool movies.

Coyote vs. Acme was just the latest nearly-completed film to be indefinitely shelved by Warner Bros. after previously pulling the plug on a $90 million, Leslie Grace-starring Batgirl movie and a $40 million Scooby Doo holiday film.
