Courtney Barnett, Hermitude, Vance Joy and Tame Impala Lead ARIA Awards Nominations

Courtney Barnett, Hermitude, Vance Joy and Tame Impala dominate the nominations for this year’s ARIA Awards, which will be held Nov. 26 at The Star in Sydney.

Barnett is out in front with eight nods, including chances for album of the year and best female artist, while Hermitude and Joy (real name James Keogh) are up for seven awards, and Tame Impala has six mentions.

Barnett and Kevin Parker’s psychedelic rock band won’t have to wait until the ceremony to taste victory. They’ve already opened their accounts at a pre-ARIAs gathering, with Barnett winning her first-ever ARIA in the best cover art category for her critically-acclaimed debut album Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit (Milk! Records / Remote Control) and Parker grabbing producer of the year and engineer of the year honors for his work on his group’s third album, Currents (Modular / Universal Music Australia), which topped the national albums chart on its release in July.

Meanwhile, newcomers Gang Of Youths and Jarryd James figure prominently with five ARIA Award nominations and Daniel Johns makes a strong showing with four mentions. There’s a hattrick of nominations for Conrad Sewell, Flight Facilities, Lee Kernaghan, Paul Kelly, The Preatures, Sia and The Waifs, while 5 Seconds Of Summer, Alison Wonderland, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Meg Mac, Peking Duk, Shane Nicholson and The Veronicas each collect a pair of nominations.

Independent recording artists again punched about their weight. Indie acts recorded four of the five album of the year-nominated sets, and accounted for three out of the five nods in each of the best female and best male categories.

The Australian record industry’s flagship awards ceremony will again encourage fans to vote on four categories: song of the year, best international act, best Australian live act and best video. Details on voting can be found at the official ARIA Awards Website.

Nominations for the annual gala were announced Wednesday morning during a presentation in Sydney, at which the ARIA Fine Arts & Artisan Awards categories were handed out to Barnett, Parker, Gurrumul (best world music album for The Gospel Album and Triple J (best original soundtrack/cast/show album for Beat The Drum)

The 2015 ARIA Awards will be on broadcast on the free-to-air TEN Network. It’s supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, Telstra, The Star, David Jones, Qantas and PPCA.
