Courteney Cox Revealed the Shocking Way Her Fiancé Broke Up With Her Before Their Reconciliation

Courteney Cox knows that a relationship in the Hollywood spotlight isn’t easy after marrying and divorcing actor David Arquette. Her subsequent relationship with Snow Patrol musician Johnny McDaid has also had its own set of challenges, and she revealed their most painful moment together.

The 59-year-old actress got raw and real on the Minnie Questions podcast about how their breakup happened in 2015 after three years of dating. Describing it as “really intense,” Cox divulged, “We broke up in therapy.” The hard part about that moment is that it happened “within the first minute” of their session and she “didn’t know it was coming.” Talk about a shock to the system!

“And I was like ‘What?’ And we were engaged. And I was so shocked, I was in so much pain, I also don’t like surprises,” Cox added. “And he’s an incredible human being, so he wasn’t trying to surprise. He was in that much pain in the relationship.” Instead of “going “F**k him,” the Friends star decided to work on herself where she “learned how to reclaim my voice, boundaries, what were my motives in life” — it turned out to be a healthier situation for both of them.

“And I’m really thankful a) nothing will ever hurt me that bad again, and b) most of all, most importantly, I completely changed,” Cox noted. “It takes a lot of bravery to end something that has so much passion, or end anything. I’m thankful that Johnny was so bold and brave because it was life-changing for me, and I’m sure for him.” While fans might think the couple is engaged again, they decided to downgrade their status to boyfriend and girlfriend — which even Cox admitted was “strange,” but it works for them.

Their breakup didn’t last long either. They announced their split in December 2015 and were officially back together by May 2016. “Everything’s new,” she said on an episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls. “And we have both really worked on ourselves on the parts that needed the most attention. And it feels really different.” Even though they aren’t engaged and have no plans to marry, Cox claimed to People that she feels “married in my heart.” That is what we call a Hollywood success story!
