Michigan Couple Celebrates 79th Wedding Anniversary: 'We Never Go to Bed Mad at Each Other'

Not many people can say they’re celebrating their 79th wedding anniversary!

However, that is the case for couple Bob and Betty Jensen of Stanwood, Michigan, who say they are still very much still in love after reaching the special milestone together on Saturday.

Sharing the secret to remaining happily married all these years later, Betty told Big Rapids Pioneer, “We never go to bed mad at each other. We never do.” She added, “You always have to remember that life isn’t like what it was when you were young. But there’s such a strong love there.”

“We hope that when we have to die, we can sit in these chairs and go together,” Betty, 96, said of her final wish with her husband. “That doesn’t generally happen but that would be nice.”

Bob, 97, and Betty tied the knot on a snowy day in January 1945 in the town of Stanwood, where they still reside to this day.

After getting married and then buying furniture and groceries for their house, the pair "had only $12 to their name," per the Pioneer. Though, their love for each other remained strong.

"Twelve dollars meant something 70-something years ago, but we never had a lot,” Bob, who used to work as a handyman, told the outlet. “We never had a boat because we never had time for that stuff. We always took that time and put it on somebody else.”

Decades on, that includes the couple's three children, seven grandchildren, great-grandchildren and 20 great-great grandchildren.

And for Bob and Betty, nurturing those closest to them is what has brought them the most joy over the years. “[Bob] built each one of his kids a three-bath home,” Betty revealed. “He never charged them, only for material cost.”

(Her husband also built the house the pair still live in together.)

The couple have also taken in those who they’ve come across in need of care, including a girl they raised from age 11 to 18 as well as a schoolteacher.

“That’s what makes you happy. It’s doing something for somebody else. When you make somebody else happy, it makes me happy," Betty said.

Bob and Betty have also gone through their share of hardships in the years they’ve been together after losing relatives. Most recently, the lost one of their sons, which, according to Betty, “just [made] us grow closer.”

“I love him just like I did. But that love, as you grow older, is different,” Betty said of her husband. “It’s a stronger love. I don’t hear good, and he can’t see. So, he helps me hear and I help him see. We help each other.”
