Gary Allan has said "I do!"

The country music artist, 56, married his longtime love Molly Martin in a private ceremony in Tennessee on Feb. 5, attended by only an officiant and a photographer.

"We wanted something low-key that was representative of some of our favorite times together," Allan tells PEOPLE of the intimate nuptials.

"We had a private ceremony close to home, then ended the day with dinner and drinks with a few close friends," he continued, adding, "It could not have been a more perfect day!"

Allan and Martin's wedding came about spontaneously. The pair had been engaged for more than two years, and one day they decided to just go for it.

“Molly and I had been trying to find the right time and right spot to get married, and we just decided the time was now," Allan tells PEOPLE. "We just didn’t want to keep waiting."

He adds, "We may still do a bigger celebration later on, but for now we are happy to be husband and wife.”

"The hardest thing about being in the music business for a long time is not getting jaded," he said at the time. "The only answer to, 'I don't hear it,' is, 'Then I got more.' That's all you can ever do. 'Never stop betting on me. I'll be right back with better.' That's always my attitude."

He also spoke about his unique slant on the country music genre, particularly with Ruthless, which features lots of drums, assertive guitar and his distinctive vocals.

"Even the songs that are dark have kind of a rock 'n roll poetry to them," Allan said. "There's nothing really sad. I think all of them are unfiltered and clever. I think it takes you everywhere. Those are the best records that take you on a journey of a little bit of everything."
