Country music has been priding itself in recent years on its genre-inclusivity, with artists ranging from Elle King all the way up to Beyonce making waves on Nashville’s biggest award nights. The 52nd annual Academy of Country Music Awards followed in this trend, presenting a country-solid lineup for the first two hours and 50 minutes before bringing out 2017’s already-best genre blend of the year, the Backstreet Boys and Florida Georgia Line.
FLAGAline and BSB have, of course, already released their duo effort “God, Your Mama and Me” in February, so this collaboration was hardly a surprise. Nor was their choice to perform it at the awards show. What was a fun perk, however, was their segue into the Backstreet Boys’ 1997 hit “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” which got the entire audience smiling and on their feet.
Lest fans think that country is a new territory for the Backstreet Boys, it should be recalled that the boy band took the stage with country queen Shania Twain back in 1999 for a touching rendition of her hit “From This Moment On.”
No wonder they were so comfortable on the ACMs stage!
The 52nd Academy of Country Music Awards were aired live April 2 from Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena.
