Countdown to Cosmic Holler: Sci-fi film fest will be Saturday

Oct. 19—ASHLAND — Cosmic Holler Film Festival offers the public the chance to spend the day at the theater.

The event, which showcases science fiction movies, will start at 11 a. m. Saturday at the Paramount Arts Center. One of the organizers, Benjamin Hawkey, said the day will consist of short films, feature films, a movie premier and a talk by guest speaker LTG Daniel Karbler, commander of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command and Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense.

The movie "American Werewolves: The Skinwalkers" by produced by Small Town Monsters and directed by Seth Breedlove will premier at the festival.

Small Town Monsters, based in Minerva, Ohio, has the goal of making movies about folklore of small towns and the lost and unusual stories of those areas.

An awards ceremony is planned at the end of the evening, with categories including Grand Prize (best in show), Audience Choice, Best Feature (more than 45 minutes), Best Short (less than 45 minutes), Best Documentary and Cosmic Holler Creative Award.

The following movies were chosen to compete; some will be screened during the event:

"Carrots for Conrad"

After a curse is placed upon Conrad, he suspects he might be turning into a carrot.

"Moon Shine Over Kepler County"

directed by Kyle D. Lee

Three moonshiners in the backwoods encounter a spaceship and its crew searching for fuel.

"Lynn's Fire"

Lynn's Fire is a short documentary about a Kentucky man's decades-long birthday tradition of gathering family and friends for the experience of lighting an enormous bonfire and the profound impact it has on his life.

"CaSSIS. Mars Demystified"

directed by Tatiana Keller

CaSSIS is a high-resolution color stereo camera in Mars orbit, making remarkable images of the Red planet. So what mysteries has it revealed today?

"Mothership"

directed by Joe Burrascano

An intergalactic god wakes up on a barren planet with no memory of who he is or where he comes from.

"Clone"

directed by Alexander Stephens

A man meets his clone for the first time and passes on some important information regarding his future.

"Snaggletooth"

directed by Scott David Lister

Intergalactic Pirate Queen Zenobia attacks the planet Earth by awakening a kaiju-sized robotic creature and letting it loose on the city of Melbourne.

"Infection Ground Zero"

directed by Martin Neely

Set in the not-too-distant future, two agents are sent back in time to stop an outbreak that has devastated their world.

"Awake"

Directed by Francesco Paolo Cordaro and Andrea Cordaro

Farmers, John and Betty, can sense something's not quite right on their farm in New York's Wallkill River Valley. They are disturbed to discover their beloved cow has been mutilated and their crops wrecked again — all while someone (or something) stalks them just out of reach.

"Harvey and Linda: A Knives' Tale"

directed by Derrick Spruill

Linda is going through a transition in her life, which is to become a better version of herself. Up until now this meant leaving her former life as a serial killer behind.

"LifeQuest"

directed by Richard Lounello

A young physicist lives out his life in search of his greatest scientific discovery and finds one extraordinary truth.

"The Astral Woods"

directed by Isaac Rodriguez

A wife is forced into a life insurance scam and abandoned at a cabin in the woods. She soon learns the land holds an ancient secret that is not from this world

"The Devil's Tromping Grounds"

directed by Chuck Chapman

Would you have the courage to spend the night at the Devil's Tromping Ground? A beer drinking YouTuber thinks he does.
