Afzal Khan, the Labour MP for the Manchester Gorton constituency, told UK lawmakers on March 24 that his family had lost an “entire generation” to the coronavirus.
He called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to launch a public inquiry into the government’s handling of the pandemic “as soon as current restrictions are lifted.” Johnson responded that he was “committed to an inquiry to learn the lessons.”
In his statement, Khan said: “In my family, we have lost an entire generation. I couldn’t hold my mum’s hand as she lay dying, and I recently lost both my father and mother-in-law within just days of one another. Grieving families like mine want and deserve to understand what happened and if anything could have been done to prevent this tragedy.”
As of March 23, 126,284 people had died in the UK within 28 days of a positive test for the coronavirus. Credit: Parliamentlive.tv via Storyful
