Cosplay outfits: Here are some ideas for what to wear at Corpus Christi Comic Con

Corpus Christi Comic-Con will return for three days starting Friday, July 28, with celebrities, artists, vendors and plenty of cosplayers.

Cosplaying is an activity where participants wear costumes to embody and represent a specific character. Think of it like Halloween − but with a more detailed finish.

Most cosplayers take their interpretations from anime, cartoons, comic books, television series and video games, but others also come up with their own character. What's even greater is you can gender-bend these characters with no one getting upset.

Are you still wrestling with the idea of who to cosplay at this year? Don't fret — we have plenty of suggestions for you.

Anime

Anime characters are unique, colorful and offer plenty of variety when it comes to choosing someone to portray.

Select your favorite character, or creature, and be sure to encapsulate their personality when strutting around the Comic Con.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, anyone from "Sailor Moon" or "Demon Slayer." If you want to go for someone underrated, try the "Dragon Ball" franchise or "Fate Zero."

Disney

During the Halloween season, Disney-themed costumes are usually the most popular looks, so why not perfect the outfit to cosplay?

Some classic characters can be a bit tired, so consider looking through Disney's underrated movies and TV shows for inspiration.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, any Disney princess with their sidekick or prince would be great. If you want to go for someone underrated, dig into classic Disney and go as Mad Madam Mim from "The Sword in the Stone" or Harold the Mummy in "Under Wraps."

Horror film icons

While the Caller-Times can't guarantee someone at the Corpus Christi Comic Con will also be dressed up as a beloved horror film icon, it's fair to say not that many people are usually garbed up in spooky outfits.

Regardless, there's decades of horror icons to cosplay as — and that's including B-list films.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, you can't go wrong with Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees. If you want to go for someone underrated, Candyman is an excellent choice or even Annie Wilkes from "Misery."

Make it your own

At last year's Corpus Christi Comic Con, the Caller-Times met a man who dressed up as Rooster Elvis. Yes, a rooster with Elvis garb.

So, be creative and come up with your own cool cosplay idea. Take it a step further and consider doing a crossover outfit.

What Caller-Times recommends: If creativity doesn't come easy to you, consider merging two universes together with your outfit. What if one of the "Peanuts" characters became a zombie? How about Catwoman as a Pokémon trainer?

'Star Wars'

In the world of "Star Wars," you can cosplay as someone from either the light or dark side of the "Force."

Or, you can dress up as a droid or furry creature.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, cosplaying as Princess Leia or Darth Vader is an easy option. If you want to go for someone underrated, think about Bo Katan from "The Mandalorian" or Dagan Gera from "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor."

Studio Ghibli

If you've ever watched a Studio Ghibli film, chances are you found yourself in an adventurous, fantastical and nostalgic world.

With characters so unique and lovable, you can easily find some of the most interestingly-dressed and designed animated characters to cosplay as.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, dress up as Kiki from "Kiki's Delivery Service" or Princess Mononoke from the self-titled film. If you want to go for someone underrated, consider Princess Kaguya from "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" or Marnie from "When Marnie Was There."

Superheroes

If you haven't noticed, superhero films have been dominating the box office and streaming services in the past couple of decades. But there are also superheroes from TV shows, comic books and other obscure movies.

By now, you should have a favorite superhero from the DC or Marvel universe. In other words, there's your cosplay outfit.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, Batman or Thor are simple choices which won't require you to spend too much money on accessories. If you want to go for someone underrated, Quailman from "Doug" or Hit-Girl from "Kick-Ass" are fun choices.

Supervillains

With every great superhero, there's an evil supervillain.

Time to channel your inner darkness and take on the role of a comic book character who just wants to bring destruction to the world, or universe.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, anyone from Marvel's Thanos is a go-to pick or DC's Joker. If you want to go for someone underrated, go for Marvel's Mister Negative or DC's Eclipso.

TV shows

The fun thing about choosing a character from TV shows is there are plenty of series to choose from.

You got "Supernatural," "Family Guy," "Gilligan's Island" and "Rick & Morty" to name just a few.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, someone from "The Simpsons" will be fun or a character from "The Office." If you want to go for someone underrated, dress up as one of the many characters from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "Xena: Warrior Princess."

Video games

Next to Disney characters, video game characters are an easy way for someone to start in the cosplaying world.

But just like cosplaying, video games allow people to escape into a fantasy world and be someone different and do things never thought imaginable.

What Caller-Times recommends: If you want to play it safe, Mario and Luigi are easy outfits to pair up with your buddy. If you want to go for someone underrated, think of William Birkin from "Resident Evil 2" or one of the inklings from the "Splatoon" series.
