Corned beef, coffee and concoctions: How to party like St. Pat in Abilene

What do you get when you mix St. Patricks' Day with a disappointingly cold day forecast?

Green Beerrrrrr!

To cap a rather cool spring break week, the high Friday is expected to plunge from the windy 80s Thursday to right around 50, with a north wind adding more chill.

The good news is that folks can stay inside and toast the day.

Green beer, if you so desire, will be served Friday at Amendment 21. Even the foam will be green.

While good corned beef and cabbage perhaps is not easily available here - the New York Steamer at Firehouse Subs has corned beef - local drinking establishments - alcoholic or not - have specials planned.

At the least, some, such Amendment 21, will serve beer with a green tint, including the foam.

Others will offer drink specials. Irish or not, it is Friday and the end of the work week.

The Pour House downtown hinted at special drinks, then posted a few concoctions online: the Shamrocked, the Magically Delicious and Patty's Espresso Martini. The latter, priced at $10, uses Irish whiskey, espresso, cream de cacao, Kahlua and, yes, edible gold glitter.

It may be too pretty to drink.

The Shamrocked centers on coconut rum while the Magically Delicious used cucumber vodka. Irish enough for March 17.

For those for start the day with or prefer coffee throughout, Mad Coffee & More, 8049 U.S. Highways 83/84, has four specialties:

  • Leprechaun cold brew

  • Pot of Gold Frappe

  • Irish Cream Latte

  • Green Mint Frappe

Owner Laura Parker said her favorite is the green mint coffee because "we add chocolate chips."

Mad Coffee, which is celebrating 10 years this year, offers specialties for Valentine's and other celebrations.

"Our employees come up with the recipes," she said.

The Pot of Gold Frappe won't have money at the bottom of the cup, she said, but it will be sprinkled with gold.

Grain Theory has a street party planned from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday on North Second, between Pine and Cypress streets. There is no admission fee, with Irish beer, music and street food available for purchase.

And going in a different direction, Dairy Queen has introduced its Under the Rainbow shake.
