Rom-coms are back in style, and few know that better than Constance Wu, who starred in "Crazy Rich Asians," the feel-good romantic comedy that swept the box office this summer.

"Things might seem like they're not going so well [in the world]," Wu told AOL at an exclusive American Express event in New York. "But there are small acts of love and kindness going on every day that don't get reported in the media. And I think storytelling picks up on that and sort of offers that reminder that there are good things out there, too."

The actress was celebrating American Express' Pay It Plan It, a feature that helps cardholders organize their own customized payment schedule. Meanwhile, she said, her own schedule is looking repetitive these days -- but in a good way.

"My whole life right now is season 5 of 'Fresh off the Boat.' That's the only thing in my calendar for right now," she said. "It's great! We're reaching syndication this year, which is a real milestone."

With her focus squarely centered on the ABC sitcom, Wu hasn't had much time to think about the highly-anticipated sequel to "Crazy Rich Asians," which is likely to be filmed in China. Wu readily admitted she's not involved in any part of the pre-production process, but she does have one particular hope for the film:

"I'd like it to be directed by Jon [M. Chu] again," she said. "That's the one thing I would love!"
