Despite what you may have heard, ska music is no joke. It’s a vital, multifaceted genre with a global impact and thriving community. The Consequence Podcast Network is proud to stake our two-toned flag on that belief by welcoming the latest addition to our roster, In Defense of Ska. Check out the trailer above, and follow the series wherever you get your podcasts.

Hosted by renowned music journalist and author Aaron Carnes and veteran ska musician Adam Davis (Omnigone, Link 80), In Defense of Ska is based on Carnes’ best-selling, soon-to-be-expanded book of the same name.

The weekly series dives deep into ska music’s rich history and unique culture to challenge mainstream misperceptions and celebrate the genre’s enduring legacy. Featuring insightful conversations with ska legends, emerging artists, comedians, and other culture figures who share Carnes and Davis’ deep appreciation for ska, the podcast uncovers the genre’s influence on music, pop culture, and even politics.

“As a long time music journalist and lifetime ska fan, it always disappointed me that ska never got the attention and respect that other genres got,” says Carnes. “This inspired me to devote seven years of my life to writing In Defense of Ska, and it fuels me every week to make each episode as compelling as possible. There’s still so many ska stories to be told; we’re happy to be the ones to do it.”

With over 150 episodes already in the series’ archives, featured guests have included Fred Armisen, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, The Police’s Stewart Copeland, Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ Joe Gittleman, Margaret Cho, Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, and more. Already confirmed for upcoming episodes are the likes of 311’s Pnut, Jawbreaker’s Adam Pfahler, Fishbone’s Norwood Fisher, Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin, Mr Bungle’s Trevor Dunn, and others.

In Defense of Ska has helped me deepen that understanding of ska,” Davis says. “The connections we have made with many guests have turned into deep meaningful friendships. The best thing about current ska is the community around it. Now more than ever, ska is about inclusivity and unity.”
