From concerts to WorldFest: Here's 15+ ways to celebrate Labor Day in Louisville

Labor Day weekend is the last holiday of the summer and in Louisville, there are tons of fun activities and events on deck, starting with a concert with Parrotheads in Paristown, a huge flea market; WorldFest, a full-blown festival to honor the diverse population and different cultures, The Mayor's Hike, Bike and Paddle and more. Here is a list of things to do around Louisville for the (last!) holiday weekend of the summer.

SEPTEMBER 1

Parrotheads in Paristown: Trop Rock Music Festival

WHAT: This music festival presented by Derby Parrotheads features a lineup of Jimmy Buffet tribute artists and trop rock bands. Also, photo activations, tasty food trucks, drink vendors and giveaways.

Performers include:

  • Friday: John Allan Miller (5 p.m.); Peter & Brendan Mayer (6:30 p.m.); Conch Republic (8:30 p.m.)

  • Saturday: Sandbar Soul (1 p.m.); Rum Monday (2:45 p.m.); Dan Sullivan (4:30 p.m.); Jonas Lorence Band (6 p.m.); Johnny Russler & The Beach Bum Band (8:30 p.m.)

Kentucky Flea Market Labor Day Spectacular

WHAT: Shop the annual Labor Day Spectacular which will have more than 600 booths filled with quality dealers selling antiques, jewelry, clothes, and more.

WHEN: Sept. 1 and 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sept. 3, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sept. 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WHERE: West Wing and Pavilion at the Kentucky Exposition Center, 937 Phillips Lane

COST: Free admission. Parking is $12 per vehicle with $6 cash back with any purchase.

Red Clay Strays

WHAT: Born and bred in the red dirt clay of south Alabama, Brandon Coleman (lead vocals/guitar), Drew Nix (vocals/electric guitar/harmonica), Zach Rishel (electric guitar), Andrew Bishop (bass) and John Hall (drums), blended their unique individualities and influences together to create a band with a rare sincerity that is not often seen in today’s industry.

WHAT: Louisville’s international festival is one of the most diverse, inclusive, and equitable events in the region, featuring three stages showcasing international, national, regional, and local performers; a vendor village with nearly 150 international-themed arts, crafts, merchandise, and food booths; The WorldFest Global Village and The Parade of Cultures.

The Black Boy Narratives

WHAT: The Black Narratives is a play of monologues written by Christian Loriel Lucas. In 2021, Christian began interviewing Black males between the ages of 5 to 25. She recorded their personal stories and reflections, which later inspired the play.

In partnership with American Musical Productions, they will perform music from “Naughty Marietta,” “Show Boat,” “The Desert Song,” “Anything Goes,” “The Student Prince” and more. Featuring soloists Emily Albrink, Chad Sloan, Erin Alcorn, Tristan Tournaud, and a 25-piece orchestra and chorus under the direction of Joseph Rubin.

Mayor’s Hike, Bike & Paddle

WHAT: Enjoy hiking, biking and paddling and various fitness activities from yoga and Zumba to Tai Chi at the Mayor's Hike, Bike and Paddle.

  • Hikers: This year’s hike will consist of a 4-mile walk with multiple marked turnaround points throughout. From the Great Lawn follow the Ohio River east to Beargrass Creek Pump Station.

  • Bikers: Cycle from the Great Lawn to Shawnee Park and back. The roads will be closed for safe travel and there will be individuals riding along to help with any roadside assistance

  • Paddlers: Will have the option of launching at the Harbor Lawn or the University of Louisville Boat Docks and paddling downstream to meet the other paddlers. This year’s paddle will go from the Harbor Lawn downriver to the McAlpine Locks, through the locks, and to the Shawnee Park Boat Ramp.

  • Free fitness activities include Yoga with Yoga East, Tai Chi with Nu Chapter Tai Chi Chuan & QiGong Institute, and Zumba with Nu Image Fitness.

WHERE: Great Lawn, Waterfront Park, 231 E Witherspoon St.

WHEN: Sept. 4. Fitness activities will begin at 8 a.m. The Hike, Bike & Paddle will begin at 10 a.m.
