Conan O’Brien returned to the NBC late night program The Tonight Show for the very first time since he was fired from hosting it in 2010.

Over the course of the two-segment interview, O’Brien reminisced about his days at NBC, including his 16-year run as host of Late Night and his all-too-brief run helming The Tonight Show. “I was here for 16 years doing the Late Night show before we went out to LA right across the hall. All these memories came flooding back to me… When someone else is in your studio, it feels weird,” O’Brien noted.

Though O’Brien called The Tonight Show “the best job in the world,” he said he prefers hosting a podcast due to the extended format it provides for him to talk at length with “his heroes,” like Carol Burnett. “This is a nice thing to do at this stage of my life… it’s really fun.”

O’Brien also shared funny anecdotes about taking a selfie with the wrong person at the airport, and how Prince once lied to him backstage at a charity event he hosted. “He had this sort of trickster thing about him… He was like this Batman villain, who was perfect looking who played little mind games with you in a fun way,” O’Brien said of Prince.

O’Brien also used his appearance to promote his new travel series, Conan O’Brien Must Go, which will premiere on Max on April 18th.

It’s the first time O’Brien has returned to The Tonight Show since the infamous 2010 conflict that saw him host the show for only seven months before being fired and replaced by its former host, Jay Leno. When Leno retired for the second time in 2014, it was Fallon who got the call to replace him.

Speaking to TMZ before last night’s taping, though, O’Brien expressed that there’s no bad blood. When asked about his appearance, he said, “I’m really excited. I have a lot of really nice memories of 30 Rock. It was a big part of my life, so it’s so nice to go back. I’m a fan of Jimmy’s. So, it’s all good.” Closing, he added, “and I think my hair looks good!”

In other O’Brien news, he’s been keeping himself busy recently. Beyond Conan O’Brien Must Go, he recently interviewed a reunited Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Steve Albini for the 30th anniversary of In Utero. Last year, he also appeared in the Please Don’t Destroy movie, The Treasure of Foggy Mountain.

In May, O’Brien’s podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend will host a live taping for Netflix Is a Joke Fest 2024. Grab tickets here.
