Conan Had the Most Romantic Moment of His Life With Garry Shandling

From Esquire

When you try to list the funniest writers in TV history, two names immediately come to mind: Conan O'Brien and Garry Shandling. O'Brien penned most of the iconic Simpsons episodes, defining the modern animated sitcom. Shandling paved the way for awkward meta-comedy and the Louis C.K.s of today. Many critics would say we're living in a golden age of television, and that's thanks to the influence of O'Brien and Shandling. It only makes sense that both these guys would have spent a romantic week together in Hawaii that we could only imagine was filled with hilarious sexual tension and some truly heartwarming moments.

In 2010, O'Brien was abruptly removed from his tragically short-lived time hosting The Tonight Show. Afterward, O'Brien was in a bad place. He's always been open about this dark time in his life after The Tonight Show and before he landed on his feet with his own TBS program. But there was someone, a good friend, who helped him through it: Garry Shandling. Last night, still in shock about the death of Shandling, O'Brien told a story about how the late-comedian helped him through it.

He was in Hawaii, alone in a hotel room, when he got a call from Shandling: "I'm staying three doors down," O'Brien said in his best Shandling voice. "We're on an island. There's no avoiding me." The two ended up spending the entire week together. "I was at a real low point, he counseled me, he cheered me up, he told me jokes," O'Brien said. "We're both watching the sun go down and I turn to Garry and said, 'Garry this is the most romantic moment of my life, and it's with you.'"

Then O'Brien played a clip from the first time he hosted the Emmys, where Shandling helped him out with a bit. Here are some other great moments between O'Brien and Shandling:
