After seemingly confirming his romance with Jennifer Hudson, Common has shared his stance on marriage — and whether he sees a wedding in his own future.

The rapper, 51, appeared on Today with Hoda & Jenna on Monday to talk about his new book, And Then We Rise: A Guide to Loving and Taking Care of Yourself, and he revealed that the work he’s done on himself that led him to write the book also showed him what kind of relationship he’s seeking.

“I feel like I have grown and the work that I’ve done on myself has allowed me to see that I am a marrying type,” Common told Hoda Kotb after she asked about whether Hudson could “be the one.”

He said that he’s “capable” of marrying someone, and that “at some point in my life, I may want to do that,” but he’ll “know when the right time is” — and he’ll make it clear to Hudson, 42.

“I would communicate with that person and if she’s feeling that, then why not?”

Common also talked to Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager about his appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, which was first teased over the weekend and, in Bush Hager’s words, “went viral overnight.”

“We had a little fun,” Common said of the interview, which airs Monday. “I felt like, why not just be loving and honest with who I am and who we are. And it felt good, it was fun, we had a good time.”

He said that he’s a “very private” person when it comes to his personal life and “things that are sacred,” but the couple “had a good time” on Hudson’s show.

In the teaser clip for the rapper’s interview with Hudson, posted on Sunday, he answered Hudson’s question about whether he’s dating anyone by describing a list of attributes — including winning an Oscar on her first film, Dream Girls, having an EGOT and having a talk show — as among the “high standards” for the girlfriend he was teasing, all of which apply to Hudson.

During his appearance on Today, the Suicide Squad actor also opened up about how his perspective on relationships more generally has changed for the “better.”

“Certain things that I would do in relationships were based on childhood experiences and I wasn’t being totally present in the relationship. I would carry things that had affected me before and would project that on to the person,” he candidly admitted.

“Once you start recognizing that and just having an understanding of, ‘I need to be present,’ and you’re conscious of that, you can step back and say, ‘Hey, let me assess this and really be true and honest with what this relationship is.’ And not bring my garbage, my baggage.”

He also learned to “set boundaries” in his life.

“That’s hard to do. And boundaries for yourself — that’s what self-love is like.”

Speculation about a romantic relationship between the stars began in 2022 when they were spotted together in Philadelphia and Chicago after it was announced in May 2022 that they would be starring in the upcoming action-thriller Breathe together.

While they’ve played coy about any romantic involvement with each other since then, they’ve made several public appearances recently together — particularly at NBA games — that fueled the speculation.
