Commanders land raw, talented passer in new mock draft
When will the Washington Commanders finally solve the quarterback position?
The Commanders have been searching for a franchise quarterback for over 30 years. They’ve tried everything. Signing veterans, trading for established starters, reclamation projects, moving up in the NFL draft and even drafting two in the same draft — they’ve done that twice.
Yet, the most important position in sports remains a problem for Washington.
Sam Howell’s promising start in Week 18 gave fans hope. Howell showed off his big-time arm and his running ability, and he proved the moment was not too big for him. And after firing offensive coordinator Scott Turner two days after the season ended, the Commanders are telling prospective coordinator candidates that Howell is the plan at quarterback in 2023.
It sounds like Washington would like to give Howell every chance to start and will push him with a veteran quarterback, someone like Taylor Heinicke, if they can convince him to return.
Would the Commanders select a quarterback in the upcoming 2023 NFL draft?
In a new mock draft from The 33rd Team, at No. 16 overall, the Commanders select quarterback Anthony Richardson from the University of Florida.
Richardson might need time to develop, but he is a high-upside prospect at 6-foot-4, 236 pounds. Washington needs to add a spark to their offense.
Richardson is an intriguing prospect. His upside is massive. He may be the most talented quarterback of all in the upcoming draft. However, there are concerns. Richardson has the tools to be an elite quarterback but has battled inconsistency, and his mechanics need some work.
Ultimately, Richardson will not make it to No. 16 in April. Someone will likely select him in the top 10. Meanwhile, Washington will likely be on the lookout for help on the offensive line or at cornerback in round one.
