This week, we’re talking about Foo Fighters’ near-classic 1997 sophomore album, The Colour and the Shape, which turns 20 this Saturday (May 20). Chris DeVille of Stereogum phones in to discuss his own remembrance of the album, about why we tend to remember the LP as being a little bigger (and maybe a little better) than it actually was, and how well both the big singles and the deep cuts have held up two decades later.

Then, we’re skipping a head in the timeline a little to talk about Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” The Hot 100-topping mega-ballad doesn’t officially turn 20 until this December, but its 20th birthday will nonetheless be celebrated by Celine herself at this Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, where she’ll be performing the classic Titanic single.

Mickey Rapkin, Pitch Perfect author and culture writer, calls in to discuss the fantastic oral history of Celine Dion’s signature hit that he wrote for Billboard this week. He talks about some of the unlikely history behind the song — which Dion originally didn’t want to sing, and which Titanic director James Cameron wanted no part of for his movie — and how it nonetheless survived as one of the last great blockbuster soundtrack singles.
