Fan favorite comics author Scott Snyder is jumping back into the horror field, this is time with a three-issue mini-series for upstart publisher DSTLRY.

Titled White Boat, the comic will reteam the writer, who became a superstar thanks to his Batman work for in DC in the 2010s, with artist Francesco Francavilla. The two collaborated on a horror mini-series titled Night of the Ghoul, which is now set up for adaptation at 20th Century Studios with 21 Laps producing.

According to the publisher, the boats in White Boats are the mega-yachts that the super-rich use to traverse the globe. They are floating islands where your every desire can be fulfilled. Getting invited on board should be a dream come true…that is, until the crew traps and transports its guests to a remote island where secret cults have existed for millennia, working on something called “The Human Project.”

“I’ve always loved stories about what’s hidden in the ocean, both good and bad,” said Snyder regarding some of the origins of the story. “Monstrous things like the Kraken or Godzilla, or wondrous discoveries like Atlantis, or mysterious ships full of treasure. The story is sort of a tribute to all of those things. It’s got wonder and terror both, though a good amount more terror.”

The work of Lovecraftian maritime madness is being described as having tone of Hereditary and Jurassic Park, as well as the H.G. Wells classic The Island of Dr. Moreau.

“The book has some definite sci-fi and horror influences, everything from Jules Verne to The Island of Dr. Moreau, but I think more than anything it’s influenced by this moment,” said Snyder. “It feels like we’re at a real inflection point right now, on the cusp of a very changed reality because of scientific discovery. The world feels kind of entropic, with things falling apart, yet at the same time there are these wild hopes for technologies like gene editing and artificial intelligence, and so the book was born of that feeling, that fear and hope.”

As with all DSTLRY books, the mini-series will be oversized and 48 pages per issue. The first issue hits in March 2024.

The publisher launched its first book this summer. An anthology of 11 stories, The Devil’s Cut was an 88-page blastoff that sold out of the more than 50,000 copies at the distributor level, landing it among the top-selling books of August. It was an impressive feat for a new publisher although clearly helped by the impressive roster DSTLRY creators David Steinberger and Chip Mosher  assembled.  Among the founding bold-faced creators are Brian Azzarello, Marc Bernardin, Elsa Charretier, Joëlle Jones, James Tynion IV and Eduardo Risso. Snyder and Francavilla are also founding creators.

It has since unveiled a comic by writer-artist Jock titled Gone as well as Somna, by Tula Lotay & Becky Cloonan

The company styles itself as a comics publisher and physical-digital collectibles company that seeks to redefine creator-owned comic books for consumers worldwide.
