Comcast Agrees To Add Sling TV App To Its X1 Platform

Comcast seems to be growing comfortable with other companies’ streaming video services: Its X1 platform is preparing to offer Sling TV — a skinny bundle service from one of Comcast’s most vigorous competitors: Dish Network — the companies say today.

Earlier this month Comcast agreed to add Netflix to the cloud-based platform, designed to give subscribers similar viewing experiences on their TVs and digital devices. About 45% of Comcast’s 22.4 million video customers are on X1.

No word yet on when the Sling TV app will be available on X1. Comcast says that the pricing will be “consistent with current offers on other platforms,” which typically start at $20 a month.

The change means that X1 customers who also subscribe to Sling won’t have to switch away from the cable box, and to a separate input on the TV.

The companies are promoting Sling’s multicultural packages that start at $10 a month.

“Our customers are becoming increasingly diverse and this is a fantastic opportunity to quickly deliver even more customized and multicultural programming to them, on an X1 platform that’s smart, fast and easy-to-use.” Comcast Cable’s GM of Multicultural Services Javier Garcia says.

Sling’s Chief Product Officer Ben Weinberger echos that, but adds that X1 users also can buy “the full suite of Sling TV programming.”

Sling’s app will make available 425 channels including more than 320 multicultural networks in 21 languages.
