Colton Ryan Joins Elle Fanning in Texting Suicide Case Series ‘Girl From Plainville’ at Hulu
Colton Ryan has signed on to star opposite Elle Fanning in the upcoming Hulu drama series “The Girl From Plainville,” Variety has learned.
Fanning as Michelle Carter and is inspired by the true story of her controversial “texting-suicide” case. Based off the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron, the limited series will explore Carter’s relationship with Conrad “Coco” Roy III (Ryan) and the events that led to his death and, later, her controversial conviction of involuntary manslaughter.

Coco is described in the series as a sweet, caring young man grappling with anxiety and loneliness in a world he doesn’t feel he fits into. When he serendipitously meets Carter, he sees in her someone who understands his struggles and seems to see the real him. But his relationship with Carter takes a dark turn as he sets his sights on ending his life and becomes dependent on her support to see it through.
Ryan recently wrapped filming on the feature adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen.” He also recently starred in the Apple series “Little Voice” at Apple. His other credits include the features “Uncle Frank,” “”The Social Ones,” and “Adam,” while his TV credits include “The Americans,” “Homeland,” and “Law & Order: SVU.”
He is repped by Gersh.
Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus will co-write the series and serve as executive producers and co-showrunners. Fanning and Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward will also executive produce. Barron and Erin Lee Carr will serve as consulting producers. UCP will serve as the studio, while Kelly Funke will oversee the project for Macmanus’ Littleton Road Productions. Littleton Road is currently under an overall deal at UCP. Lisa Cholodenko is set to direct the first two episodes.
