Colorado Dad Dies in Skydiving Accident: 'Loved to Push the Limits in His Hobbies'

A Colorado father died after a skydiving accident earlier this month in Texas, authorities said.

Jacob Glenn Todd, of Elizabeth, died on Oct. 15 when his parachute malfunctioned, according to USA Today, NBC affiliate KCBD-TV and Fox affiliate KDVR.

Gaines County Sheriff's Office deputies and other first responders rushed to the scene of the accident at Seagraves Airport off Highway 385, USA Today and KCBD-TV reported. Bystanders had already been providing life-saving measures when authorities arrived, per the reports.

The 36-year-old was taken to Seminole Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to USA Today and KCBD-TV.

The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. KCBD-TV reported that the Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident.

The man's father told KDVR that Jake who had recently completed his 100th jump for the year and was finishing the season at a skydiving event in Texas when the tragic accident unfolded, per the station.

"The guy was not only my son, but my best friend,” his father said. "He knew that I didn’t necessarily like it because I was afraid of the risk, but I also understood what pleasure it brought to his life."

According to his obituary, Jake is survived by his "equally special daughter," both of his parents and other family members.

"Jake was blessed with a contagious smile, tone and enthusiasm that all enjoyed," read the tribute.

A GoFundMe campaign launched for funeral expenses and for his daughter describes Jacob as "always willing to lend a hand and pitch in when he sensed someone in need."

"He knew how to make you laugh and loved to push the limits in his hobbies, whether racing cars or skydiving," read a message on the page, which has raised over $10,000 as of Friday.

"Most important to Jake was being an extremely loving father to his daughter, Jeune," the message continued. "Together they loved to go on adventures like rock hunting, going to theme parks, and sky diving. If you knew Jake, you knew Jeune was always attached at his hip. His sudden death has been difficult for his family to process and handle."
