The Color Purple received a new trailer showing the power of sisterly love. On Tuesday (Oct. 10), Warner Bros. released the teaser with a closer look at the “bold new take” on the classic book and film.

The movie follows a poor Black girl named Celie and her bond with her sister, Nettie. After being separated from Nettie, Celie must make sense of the world around her and create her own sense of fulfillment. The new trailer jumps through time with memories of the girls as children and adults.

As an adult, Celie is driven to reunite with her sister and rekindle their bond. “I know my sister’s somewhere in the world,” she declares. “Someday, we’re going to meet again.” Later in the trailer, Celie tells her husband, Mister, that she wants to be free from his abuse.

“I’d die before I let that happen,” he says. “Good. That’s just the going away present I’ve been needing,” she shoots back.

The film’s newly released trailer also shows off the movie’s musical elements. Taraji P. Henson steals the show towards the end as she sings “Push Da Button.”

Along with Taraji, the movie stars Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as young Celie, Fantasia Barrino as adult Celie, Halle Bailey as young Nettie, Ciara as adult Nettie, H.E.R, Corey Hawkins, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Deon Cole, and more. Producers on the film include Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.

Winfrey, who starred in the original 1985 movie, spoke about the film at Culture Con 2023, Entertainment Weekly reported. She referred to the movie as a “celebration of sisterhood,” adding it’s “not your mama’s Color Purple.”

“As long as there is a need for people to feel what it means to be loved up… there will be a need for The Color Purple,” Winfrey said. “I believe that in the future, this story just grows, and it never grows old.”

“It’s like how do you create something that is new but honors the source? That was the job. We know that this Color Purple is for a new generation,” explained director Blitz Bazawule during a Zoom press conference. “The context of The Color Purple itself is evergreen.”

The Color Purple will be released in theaters on Dec. 25, 2023.

Blitz Bazawule, Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson and Oprah Winfrey speak onstage as they promote the upcoming film “The Color Purple” for the Warner Bros. Pictures Studio Presentation during CinemaCon 2023, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on April 25, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
